Moving Your Pet to The UK
What the Process Actually Looks Like
Pet relocation to Great Britain involves a few requirements that catch US owners off guard — particularly around rabies vaccination sequencing and tapeworm treatment. The good news: for a compliant pet with a clear documentation trail, entry is straightforward and there’s no quarantine.
Here’s an honest breakdown of what the process involves, what drives the timeline, and what Global Tails handles on your behalf.
Moderate. The UK shares the same primary rabies vaccination logic as the EU — but adds a mandatory tapeworm treatment for dogs on every trip, and a strict documentation standard that can trigger quarantine if anything is missing or unclear.
Complexity level: Moderate
Recommended start time: 6–8 weeks before travel (longer if a primary rabies vaccination is needed)
Titer test required: No
Post-arrival quarantine: None for compliant documentation

How Will Your Pet Travel?
Pets traveling from the US to Great Britain must travel as manifest cargo. In-cabin and excess baggage options are not available for this route. Global Tails handles the cargo booking and checkin at the cargo facility, and coordinates with a receiving agent in the UK on arrival logistics.
Some carriers accommodate brachycephalic and restricted breeds as manifest cargo, provided IATA crate requirements are met and temperature conditions allow. We identify the right carrier for your pet’s breed and route.

Step-by-Step: How Pet Relocation to the UK Works
Step 1 — Microchip
Your pet must have an ISO-standard microchip, and it must be implanted before — or at the same time as — the rabies vaccination. If the microchip is implanted after the rabies vaccine, the vaccination does not count and must be repeated.
If your pet has a non-ISO microchip that can still be read, a USDA-accredited vet can implant an additional ISO chip alongside it. Both chip numbers and implantation dates must appear on the UK health certificate. In this case, the ISO chip can be implanted after the rabies vaccination and the prior vaccination history still counts — as long as at least one microchip was implanted before the most recent rabies vaccine.
Step 2 — Rabies Vaccination
This is where the UK aligns with the EU and catches most US owners off guard.
Primary vaccination: The first rabies vaccine your pet receives after microchip implantation — or any vaccine given after a lapse in coverage — is treated as a primary. The UK recognizes a primary vaccination as valid for 1 year only, even if the product is labeled for 3 years. A minimum 21-day wait applies after the primary before your pet can travel. Your vet will confirm the manufacturer’s exact immunity period and document it on the rabies certificate, as this sets the valid-from date.
Booster vaccination: If the booster is given within the 1-year validity window, it carries the manufacturer’s full stated duration and no waiting period is required. Your pet’s travel date must fall within the current booster’s validity period.
The lapse risk: If a booster is given even one day after coverage lapses, the UK treats it as a new primary — 1-year validity, 21-day wait, prior vaccination history reset. For pets arriving more than 12 months after the primary vaccination without booster documentation, the UK may require revaccination and hold the pet in quarantine for the immunity period at the owner’s expense. We track vaccine expiry on every case and flag when a booster appointment is coming due.
All rabies vaccination certificates, going back far enough to show an unbroken chain of coverage, must physically accompany your pet
Step 3 — Tapeworm Treatment (Dogs)
Dogs entering Great Britain must receive a tapeworm treatment containing praziquantel or an equivalent effective against Echinococcus multilocularis before every trip.
Timing: treatment must be administered no less than 24 hours and no more than 5 days (120 hours) before arrival in Great Britain.
Your vet must record the product name, manufacturer, date and time of treatment, and their stamp and signature in the tapeworm section of the health certificate.
Step 4 — Health Certificate and USDA Endorsement
The UK uses two versions of the Great Britain Pet Health Certificate. Which one applies depends on whether you or a designated family member or friend travel within 5 days of your pet:
Non-commercial health certificate: Used when 5 or fewer pets are traveling within 5 days of the owner or designated person. Your pet must arrive in Great Britain within 10 days of the USDA endorsement date. A signed owner declaration must accompany this certificate.
Commercial health certificate: Required when your pet travels more than 5 days before or after you, when 6 or more pets are traveling at the same time, or when ownership is changing. The 2 certificate must be issued by your vet and USDA-endorsed within 48 hours of your pet departing the US — the timing window is significantly tighter.
Both types must be issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian and endorsed by USDA-APHIS with an ink signature and embossed seal — a digital-only endorsement is not accepted.
Allow 3–5 business days for USDA endorsement. APHIS processes Monday–Friday, 7am–4:30pm CT, excluding federal holidays.
Military families: A certificate issued by a military veterinarian (Veterinary Corps Officer or civilian GS-0701 employed by the US Army Veterinary Service) does not require USDA endorsement. The same 10-day arrival window applies for non-commercial moves.
Step 5 — Travel Day
Your pet’s endorsed UK health certificate, full rabies vaccination records, and tapeworm treatment record (dogs) must physically accompany them. A border official will inspect documentation at the port of entry. For compliant pets, this is a routine check. Pets that arrive without proper documentation — or with a lapsed or incomplete vaccination chain — may be placed in quarantine at the owner’s expense, or refused entry if traveling by sea
Banned Breeds
The UK bans five dog types under the Dangerous Dogs Act:
• Pit Bull Terrier
• Japanese Tosa
• Dogo Argentino
• Fila Brasileiro
• XL Bully
Whether a dog falls into a banned type is based on appearance rather than breed name or registration. These dogs cannot enter Great Britain unless they already hold a valid Certificate of Exemption issued by UK authorities. Certificates of Exemption issued in the UK are non-transferable — a certificate from another country does not qualify.

Common Questions
If your pet already has a current booster-level rabies vaccination, 6–8 weeks is workable — the main items are the tapeworm treatment timing, the health certificate, and USDA endorsement. If a primary vaccination is needed, add at least 3–4 weeks for the 21-day wait. The first thing we’ll do when you reach out is check your pet’s vaccination history and tell you exactly where you stand.
Not if documentation is complete and compliant. Quarantine is the consequence of arriving with incomplete, expired, or incorrect paperwork — specifically around the rabies vaccination chain or health certificate validity. This is avoidable with proper planning.
The treatment window is 24 to 120 hours before you arrive in Great Britain. We build the treatment appointment into the timeline so the window lines up with your arrival date. If your journey is delayed past the 120-hour mark, you may need a new treatment before continuing — we’ll brief you on how to handle that if it comes up.
Northern Ireland follows EU pet import requirements, not UK rules. If your destination is Belfast or anywhere in Northern Ireland, see our EU/Europe destination page.
We coordinate the full cargo process — health certificate timing, vet scheduling guidance, USDA endorsement, cargo booking, and receiving agent coordination on the UK end. Vaccinations and tapeworm treatment happen at your local vet; we’ll tell you exactly what to ask for and when to schedule each appointment.

A Note on Timing
For non-commercial moves, the 10-day window from USDA endorsement to UK arrival requires careful planning — travel dates need to be confirmed before the vet appointment so the window lands correctly. For commercial moves, the 48-hour window is the tighter constraint: the vet exam, certificate issuance, and USDA endorsement all need to complete within two days of your pet departing the US. We build the timeline backward from the cargo departure date so every appointment lands at the right moment.
Ready to Get Started?
The UK is a manageable destination for pet relocation — no titer test, no quarantine for compliant arrivals, and a clear checklist. The biggest risk is documentation gaps, and that’s exactly what we’re here to prevent. The best first step is a conversation.
